Projects like this are always fun to do - you get told a brief, handed a pile of amazing footage and told to go away and create something that captures the taste of the project to come. 
I guess it's what you'd call pure editing - especially if you get to animate your own maps in After Effects like I did on this project. It was a brilliant and fun project to work on.
